Cutawhiskie Creek Outfitters

Driving down some long country road in eastern NC we got behind a Silverado pickup with a guy that was driving like a bat out of……well you know. It was Clay McPherson. Don’t let the Pher in McPherson fool you. This guy is fearless. I had called him on the way and told him we’d be there around 11am. He was busy dropping off game heads at the local taxidermists. Ok, that’s a good sign.

We pulled in to Cutawhiskie behind Clay and saw that his outfit is definitely built for hunting. From the two story lodge that was rebuilt from a fifty year old tobacco barn to the scenic backdrop of grain bins and open fields surrounded by timber I wanted to trade in my video camera for my trusty Stevens .30-06. When Clay stepped out of the truck he was busy talking to his guides on the radio and getting a report of what had been taken during the morning hunt.

We sat down in the lodge with Clay for a video interview. Clay at 30 years old has been chasing game all of his life, but at 20 years old it almost ended when he had a serious accident with a firearm. He had pulled his .270 from the gun cabinet, checked to make sure that was unloaded, and began to do a check of the firearm. Ten minutes later he went to place the gun back into the cabinet and it fired. The round struck him in the chin and basically opened up his entire face. He is truly a walking miracle and one heck of a nice guy.

Clay went on to tell us about how he is managing thousands of acres for whitetail, bear, upland game birds, and waterfowl. He has great success in putting clients on game due to seasoned guides and great management tactics. The deer mounts in the lodge were impressive. I’ve often heard people in the Piedmont of NC say that there is nothing impressive about deer in eastern NC. They were wrong. They obviously haven’t been to Cutawhiskie Creek Outfitters in Menola, NC.
